PISA: Strong Performers and Successful Reformers in Education


Reorganizing the school network to provide better facilities and new opportunities

Portugal's weak results in the 2000 PISA tests spotlighted major shortcomings in the nation's education system. In rural areas, many primary schools were small and isolated. In towns and cities, schools were often so crowded that they had to operate a double shift. Students, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, frequently had to repeat grades. Many eventually dropped out of school.

"Apostar mais na leitura, escrita e Matemática no ensino básico reduz abandono escolar"

Peter Mathews: “Há professores que pensam que ensinar é só ensinar as suas disciplinas, mas é sobretudo ensinar os seus alunos. E a forma de levar os alunos a querer aprender mais é ensiná-los de uma maneira muito activa. Para que se tornem também eles activos na sua aprendizagem”, diz. E exemplifica: “As crianças não aprendem a escrever por lhes ser dito como devem escrever, elas aprendem quando têm coisas interessantes sobre que escrever, quando são ajudadas. Se lhes disserem, eles esquecem. Se fizerem, eles percebem e lembram-se.”
